Magazine Editor Steve on the forum I've always been into my cars and longed to own something other than a white van to use on the weekends and to go to the numerous car shows and race meets I attend each year. I've always had a soft spot for Porsche 911s but as they were well out of my price range I looked to the air-cooled vehicles smaller cousin for a fun car and that's where it all began. My wife Kim has long been a fan of Beetles so we hunted down our first Dub. After an aborted start with a complete rotbox we moved onto Roobarb, our 1974 1303, a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. After 18 months as Volkswagen owners it came time to replace our daily car and we opted for a 17 year old Mk2 Golf GTi, a proper 80s hot hatch!! After buying our Beetle we joined LTV as club members to get all the advice we could on running and maintaining a 30 year old classic. Being part of the forums meant we soon gained some great new friends from the club and after helping out as volunteers at the 2nd DATP show in 2005 I decided to get more involved and become a team member. This soon led to becoming a forum moderator and guardian of the website galleries and a regular contributor to the club magazine Wheelspin. At the 2006 AGM the position of magazine editor became vacant so I choose to step up to role and put my efforts into continuing the hard work of the previous editor Paul Burgess. At the start of 2007 we decided that nice as a Beetle and a tent might be we really wanted a camper to use at the weekend shows, for camping and to take to Europe for a mini tour we'd been planning, enter Leonard, a 1971 Westfalia Campmobile imported from California in late 2006. Lowered a touch and loaded with junk we took him on an 1800 mile trip to Le Mans for the 24hr race, then onto Bad Camberg for the historic VW showand then home via the Nurburgring. Plans for the future include a bit of TLC to the interior and more lazy long weekends. |
