Delay to launch of new Bentley
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Germany) - March 12,
2002
Volkswagen AG is reported to be falling behind the
timetable for the launch of the 'midsize Bentley'. Problems are reported
to have arisen in the development of the new luxury car, notably co-ordination
between the parent group and the UK subsidiary. Although VW has declined
to comment, a spokeswoman for Bentley insisted that there would be no
delay, and that the 'midsize' Bentley would be launched next year.

It is thought that a delay would be damaging to VW
on prestige grounds, as the German company aims to assert its presence
on the luxury car market through its involvement in Bentley, rivalling
the luxury models planned by German competitors. A postponement could
also have economic implications, as VW aims for the Bentley brand to generate
profits with effect from 2004. The difficulties with the UK luxury brand
may be a reason for the surprise resignation of Tony Gott, manager to
date of the Rolls-Royce and Bentley marques within the group.
