New Beetle VR5

Volkswagen has introduced a new 170hp V5 model of the New Beetle for the European market. The V5 engine is a variation of the VR6 with one less cylinder. VW recently updated this motor adding a new 4-valve per cylinder head to improve breathing while lightening and balancing other internals. These changes yield 20 additional horsepower (bringing the total to 170hp) and improve fuel economy as well.

Shown are the new optional 17" wheels that Volkswagen will offer on GLS models (1.8T only) as part of a Sport Luxury Package, this includes sunroof. These new 7-spoke alloys come standard with 225-45/17 tires. Options include high-intensity-discharge xenon headlights, which vastly improve the already very good lighting offered on existing New Beetle models.

Other minor changes include a new rear-view mirror with automatic self-dimming features and a built in rain sensor that automatically senses water droplets on the windshield and, if desired, will automatically activate the windshield wipers at the correct speed for the amount of rain.

The above options should be available for all New Beetle models in 2001 as running changes. New Beetles with the optional 17" wheel packages should start trickling into dealerships this month.
