The March Hare

Back in November last year after travelling around the country, visiting various VW and other custom car events, it became clear that you Air-cooled enthusiasts had the lion share of the shows. It was at that point that Hannah had an idea to level the balance. So Hannah and myself ( Alex) set about getting our heads together to make a difference.

On the 28th March, after much hair pulling and frantic organisation, the MARCH HARE fun run and concours for Water-cooled VW’s finally took place at Brighton sea front.
It was a wonderfully sunny Sunday morning, when the vehicle’s gathered together at Clacket Lane services, and headed off under the watchful lens of VW Magazine. On arrival at Brighton, those taking part in the concours, under the admiring gazes of the spectators, set about cleaning and polishing their prized possessions. They had only one hour before the probing eyes of John (URO Automotive) and myself would strip their VW’s bare.

The concours was split into three categories:

  1. Standard Class (no modifications)
  2. Modified Class
  3. Classic Class ( MK1 Golf & Scirocco)

There were a varied selection of water-cooled VW’s on the day, which included MK1,2 & 3 Golf’s, Polo’s ( see June VWM), Scirocco’s, Corrado’s and Caddies. The standard varied from those who use their cars as daily runners, to those who are used to having their cars appearing as the main feature in top VW magazines. The results were as follows:

Standard Class Winner Ray Partner Golf GTI
Runner up Peter Lowther Polo Coupe
Modified Class Winner Dave Kumar MK2 Golf GTI
Runner up Wayne Russel MK3 Golf GTI
Classic Class Winner Andrew Bourne MK1 Golf GTI
Runner up Jeremy Hillock MK1 Golf GTI

Each of the winners received a trophy, champagne and vouchers.

This was the first year for the event, so unfortunately there were not the number of competitors that we had hoped for. A date change( courtesy of Brighton council) and the ensuing confusion did not work in our favour. Next year however with the advantage of hindsight, and the backing of this years sponsors, we hope the event will continue to grow. We also hope to see some of the 250ish water-cooled L&TVVW Club members supporting the event, as this year we were dominated by Club GTI.

In an events first year it is hard to find financial support. I am therefore taking this opportunity to thank the following for having the courage and faith in Hannah and myself, to provide much needed help.

URO Automotive & John
TSR Performance
Volkspares & Max
Brighton & Hove council & Chris Holm
We look forward to next year’s event & hope to see you there.

Hannah Goodchild &
Alex Tinniswood
