Advances driving, a skill for life Welcome to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, the UK’s leading Advanced Driving organisation dedicated to raising driving standards. As a qualified driver considering graduating to Advanced Driving you will probably have many questions. We hope we have answered most of them here. The cost of Advanced Driving Most people are surprised at how little our Skill for Life programme costs. The Skill for Life programme includes free theory and on road preparation with one of over 200 IAM Groups throughout the UK. It is provided by trained volunteers, all advanced drivers themselves. They are also likely to have full time jobs, so applicants may he asked to be flexible in scheduling their course. The Advanced Driving Test and (assuming you pass) even the first year's membership subscription as an Institute Member is included. The results will surprise you With the right preparation Advanced Driving is not as difficult as you may expect and is within the reach of most drivers. As with any form of advanced education and skills training, It's up to the individual to get the most from the programme which can often be completed within about 3 months. You'll be surprised at the results. Halve your risk of an accident Drivers who have qualified as full IAM members have been shown to be statistically 50 70% less likely to be involved in an accident. Optional driving experiences, such as skid pan training, may be available, but the Advanced Driving programme is not about the race track, it's all about skill, control and forward thinking on the road. Skill, control and forward thinking You probably chose to apply because you wish to improve your driving skills and safety, but the full benefits are far greater. Apart from yourself, your passengers, your family and other road users will benefit too. You will discover that you are less stressed on the roads, that you enjoy your driving more and take pleasure from applying the skill you have learnt. What do I do? On receipt of your payment and application we provide you with the IAM's driving manual ¿Pass Your Advanced Driving Test and a list of over 200 local IAM Groups. You can choose a Group most conveniently located for you, where you will receive your theory and on road guidance. You will then measure the improvement in your driving skill by taking the IAM Advanced Driving Test. You take the Test in your own vehicle and it is conducted by an IAM appointed Examiner who holds a Police Advanced Driving Certificate. It lasts approximately 90 minutes over all types of roads, usually covering about 35 miles. Upon successful competition of the Test you will receive your certificate of accomplishment and be proposed for IAM membership. The Advanced Test and IAM membership is open to drivers of motor cars, motorcycles and all commercial vehicles. There is no age limit; the only requirement is that you have held a full UK or EU license for at least 3 months. Please note that a small number of existing penalty points on your license will not normally preclude you from taking the test. Your skill will be recognised As an advanced Driver and member of the IAM, your social responsibility and skill will be recognised. In particular, you will qualify to display the coveted IAM badge on your vehicle. Members also receive the IAM magazine ¿Advanced Driving three times a year and there are opportunities to purchase special value motoring products and services, including motor insurance reflecting your advanced driver status. The Skill for Life programme includes: Your personal copy of the IAM's driving manual, Pass Your Advanced Driving Test. Associate membership of the local ]AM Group you choose, which will provide you with a course of theory and on road guidance, and a warm welcome at Group meetings, events and social activities.
